About Relationships

Reviewed by NASW Office of Social Work Specialty Practice Staff

Introduction

Ask most people who’ve been in a long-term relationship and they will agree that while their partner has been a source of considerable joy, they’ve also been the cause of pain and frustration, even the target of our anger. Relationships are not easy.

Yet some couples do manage to navigate turbulent times better than others. Psychologists, marital experts and social workers trained in this are agree that while there is no magical solution to maintaining a healthy relationship, there are positive steps you can take if yours is troubled. In fact, often the reason why some couples fare so much better than others is because they have better skills. The kinds of skills we are not routinely taught in school. Things like how to fight fair, how to make our needs known in a more effective manner than screaming, shouting and otherwise blaming our partner for all that’s gone wrong. Learning these skills can mean the difference between treading through a joyless, draining existence, and reaping more satisfaction from life.
